First prize ‘Best PhD Thesis’ and ‘Best Valorization’ OSL Awards

I am absolutely thrilled! 🙃 Over Christmas I heard I won two out of five categories in the OSL Awards, the awards our international (for the global Dutch speaking area) research school for Literary Studies hands out every year (Onderzoekschool Literatuurwetenschap). I am over the moon!

I won first prize in the category ‘Best PhD Thesis’ and ‘Best Valorization’ (how to make your research results useful).

This year’s jury consisted of OSL Board members Marguérite Corporaal, Ann Rigney, Frans Willem Korsten, Margriet van der Waal, Ted Laros and Miriam Meissner.

Genomineerd voor de Boekmandissertatieprijs 2022

Mijn proefschrift Poëzie buiten het boek. De circulatie en het gebruik van poëzie (2021) is genomineerd voor de 5e Boekmandissertatieprijs. Hoera!

De Boekmanstichting heeft tien genomineerden bekendgemaakt die doorgaan naar de tweede selectieronde van de 5e Boekmandissertatieprijs. Op 30 juni 2022 wordt de uiteindelijke winnaar bekendgemaakt tijdens het landelijke congres ‘De waarde van cultuur na corona’.

Te gast in de podcast Camping de Vrijheid

Ingmar Heytze en John Jansen van Galen nodigden mij uit als allereerste gast in hun poëziepodcast Camping de Vrijheid.

John stelt kritische vragen over mijn onderzoeksresultaten (kloppen mijn cijfers wel?), leest een straatgedicht voor dat hij heel erg slecht vindt en stelt interessante vragen over mijn definitie van poëzie. En Ingmar stelt toffe vragen over mijn positie in de academische wereld, mijn ideeën over ‘kwaliteit’ en de toekomst van het papieren boek. Én ik vertel over mijn lievelingsbord in Utrecht én Ingmar en John dragen veel poëzie voor.

Interview in VPRO Gids en voor NWO

Deze week verschenen er twee interviews met mij over mijn onderzoek naar poëzie buiten het boek.

Hugo Hoes interviewde mij voor de VPRO Gids (klik hier voor de online versie) en Mariette Huisjes deed hetzelfde voor NWO (klik hier voor de online versie). Het interview voor NWO werd ook vertaald naar het Engels (klik hier).

Emma-Sophia Nagels wrote an article on the database of Straatpoezie.nl

This is so cool and makes me so happy!

Emma-Sophia Nagels, a Dutch Comparative Literature student who did an MA in Digital Linguistics in Antwerp, contacted me earlier this year about the database hidden behind my website Straatpoezie.nl, which is a crowdsourcing website for street poetry in the Netherlands and Flanders (Straatpoëzie). I am very pro open access – that’s why my dissertation is a free e-book – and I always share that database with others, so I e-mailed it to her.

Then Emma-Sophia worked her academic magic and investigated

whether the poems that are chosen in the streetscape somehow reflect on or represent a part of its surroundings. One of the most straightforward ways (for now) is to check if and how often particular words appear in a certain condition. In this article we’re going to zoom in on the presence of two specific words, ‘stad’ (city) and ‘zee’ (sea), given the condition of the poem being located in an urban area or not.

She published her article on the website Towards Data Science and then the editors spotlighted the article, because they love it so much! So do I! Hurray for scientific co-operation!

Opname lezing Betweterfestival online

Op vrijdag 1 oktober 2021 gaf ik tijdens het wetenschapsfestival Betweter in TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht een lezing over poëzie. Waarom is lyriek (één van de oudste vormen van poëzie) nog steeds zo populair? En wat hebben Candlelightgedichten daarmee te maken?

Twee interviews Poetry International Festival online

Tijdens het Poetry International Festival 2021 verzorgde ik twee live interviews op het podium: een met de Brits-Jamaicaanse Dove dichter Raymond Antrobus, en een met de Nederlandse Dove dichter Selena Waas en de Nederlandse Dove liedschrijver Ilse Jobse.
